Part of the Pernod Ricard Group, the world’s second largest wine and spirits company, Pernod Ricard Winemakers is among New Zealand’s top wine companies. Their ambition is to reduce pesticide application through precision viticulture. In 2000, Pernod Ricard Winemakers became the first vineyard in New Zealand to trial the Smart Apply Intelligent Spray Control System, operating three sprayers with the precision spray system. David Allen, transformation manager for Pernod Ricard Winemakers, explains
“We’re always looking at ways to reduce our impact and nurture our terroirs. The LiDAR-based control from Smart-Apply fits well with our strategic goals so we were keen to investigate the technology. We ran comprehensive trials to understand how the Smart Apply System compares to our existing sprayers. Over the Vintage 2023 season, field tests using the three-row sprayer showed more than a 30% reduction in chemical usage compared to conventional sprayers. Other impressive benefits included a reduction in spray drift.” Pernod Ricard has ordered three more Smart Apply Systems for the vintage 2024 season.

In 1991, Deon and Lorraine Dekkers emigrated from South Africa to Texas to secure a better life for their family. They founded Twin Lakes Nursery, which today spans 2,000 acres, with 1,000 acres dedicated to trees. It’s now run by the second generation of Dekkers, Deon Jr. and Andre. Sustainability is a top priority. Says Deon Jr. “Our families live on the land, and we want to be respectful of our impact on the environment. We strive to see that everything is produced in environmentally friendly ways and under great working conditions for our employees.”
The Dekkers were excited that the Smart Apply System would make it possible to use less chemicals while getting the same protection for their trees. They began using Smart Apply in March 2023. The impact was immediate. “We’re using fewer tanks of chemicals so less waste and fewer re-fills,” Deon says. “Smart Apply is a win for Twin Lakes’ sustainability.
