Choosing the Right Mower Blade:
What You Need to Know
When it comes to mower blades, one size definitely doesn't fit all.
Whether you're running a zero-turn mower, a three-point finish mower, or a flail mower,
there are often multiple blade options available - each designed for specific conditions and applications.
At Messick's. we stock a wide variety of blades, and choosing the right one can have a significant
impact on your mower's performance, cut quality, and efficiency.

Understanding "Lift" and Why It Matters
You’ll hear the term lift a lot when discussing mower blades. Lift refers to the amount of airflow or vacuum generated by the curve of the blade. This fan-like effect helps stand the grass up as it’s being cut.
While it may seem like more lift is always better, that’s not always the case. Different environments and mowing tasks benefit from different lift types.
Low Lift Blades
Best for: Sandy or dusty environments
Low lift blades create minimal vacuum, which helps reduce the amount of dirt and debris pulled up off the ground. This can prolong the life of your blades, preserve your mower deck, and reduce dust clouds—especially important if you're mowing in beach areas or the dry South.
They’re also great for thick, heavy grass where you want to cut and discharge quickly without recirculating clippings under the deck.
Medium Lift / Gator Blades
Best for: General-purpose mowing with some mulching
These blades often feature serrations or notches on the rear edge. While these aren't the cutting surface, they help create moderate airflow and provide additional surfaces to mulch the grass clippings.
Also known as Gator blades or extreme blades, they strike a balance between cutting power and horsepower efficiency, making them a great all-around choice.
High Lift Blades
Best for: Fine mulching, bagging, or tall grass
These blades have a pronounced curve and generate strong airflow to lift the grass upright, allowing for a cleaner, more precise cut. They’re especially effective for bagging, as they help push clippings through the chute into your collection system.
Be aware, though: high lift blades require more horsepower and can suck up more debris, which can lead to faster blade wear in sandy or dusty areas.
There are variations in high lift blades too—some with notches for better efficiency, and others like Kubota’s heavy-duty blades that offer a solid lift across the entire blade for maximum durability.
Specialty Blade Types
Flail Mower Blades
Flail blades come in two main styles:
Sharpened flail knives – Great for clean cutting, but wear down quickly due to their fine edge. These are considered consumables and need to be replaced regularly.
Non-sharpened flail knives – Designed for heavy-duty mowing and mulching of sticks, branches, and brush. These blades rely on impact more than cutting.
Sickle Bar Blades
Sickle bar blades oscillate back and forth to create a clean, scissor-like cut. They’re mostly found on farm equipment or compact sickle bar mowers. Like mower blades, they wear out over time and are replaceable.
Rotary Cutter Blades
Think serious brush-cutting. These blades are heavy—often 8–9 pounds—and not sharp. They’re built to knock down saplings and brush up to several inches in diameter. You’ll see these on heavy-duty equipment from manufacturers like Woods, Bush Hog, and Land Pride.
