The mounting brackets are designed to go on the inside of the original guard. It easier to hold the bracket on the outside of the original guard and mark your holes. By doing this it also ends up holding the new guard about 1/8" away from the original guard so there is no chance of any vibration. Also, figuring out how high to mount it and marking where to drill the holes, would be easier with an extra set of hands.
