PROJECT: Removed/Repaired/Reinstalled both front axle gear case units on Kubota model BX2230D. R&R both front axle oil seals, R&R both front axle inner & outer bearings, R&R both front axle gear case upper dual-piece oil seals, R&R silicone sealant on both front axle gear case covers (Kubota Silicone Sealant Gray #70000-73764-620), reassembled both front axle gear case units, torqued front axle gear case covers mounting bolts, reinstalled both front gear case units to the front differential case, allowed sealant to cure overnight. The following morning serviced front differential system with 5 quarts 80/90 gear oil. Many various tools required to complete process; hand tools, torque wrench. gear puller, hydraulic press, etc. I found that a Coupling for 2 inch diameter scedule 40 PVC pipe worked nicely installing the front axle gear case upper dual-piece oil seals. Nothing easy about any part of this project. The time stated is from the start to the finish of this project.

I couldn't find out how the large gear inside of the axle case seperated. I finally used a steering wheel puller but using a hydraulic press is probably wisest. Buy a hydraulic press press for your garage. It was the best tool I used in my garage in a long time. Harbor freight has affordable ones. Once the large gear is off, then you can tap the spline out of the case cover with a rubber mallet. Once you have the outer case cover off, you are golden. Just pry out the old seal and tap in the new one using a socket the size of the diameter of the seal. I looked everywhere on how to get that large gear off and no luck. Looked for videos, forums, and even the kubota manual. I have the older bx23 model with the large gear that is tighter to the outer case cover than the newer models. I finally just decided to apply some pressure by using the steering wheel puller. I hooked the 2 jaws onto the large gear and positioned the threaded part of the tool on the spline. I torqued down and the large gear came off. I will use the hydraulic press for the other side when I do it. Installing the seal was the easy part. The job will be much easier on the other side, now that I finally know how to do the job. I have been paying the dealer between 400-500 to do this job and these outer axle seals seem to be a common failure point. So for about $100 in parts and fluid, the job was done. The other side will be a 1 day job. It took alot of time for me to do research and attempt this job. Maybe 3 days total. But well worth it for the future.
