Gently clean the destination surfaces where the oil seal will be placed, but don't scratch them or you risk making it so the seal won't seal! Lightly oil the seal to help it go in. Use the old oil seal turned around backwards to help align and seat the new seal with a rubber mallet or similar.

Time for seal install only, I did a complete rebuild of all seals, gears, and bearings in the deck gearbox. This job with cleaning and reinstall took about 6 hours. That includes removing the deck, rebuild time and reinstallation time. The only problem I saw was the exploded view of parts is misleading on how and where the bearing goes on the input shaft. Several tools required. This job is not for the faint of heart.
