An easier and faster way to remove the spanner nut is to clean it well and soak it down with penetrating oil. Let it soak while still on the backhoe attached to a tractor. Start the tractor engine and pressurize the rod guide/spanner nut end with the appropriate hydraulic control. The hydraulic pressure on the male threaded rod guide end will immobilizes it. No vice crushing force is needed that could distort the hydraulic cylinder. Use a good quality spanner nut wrench and tap the wrench with a hammer. Once the spanner nut is removed disconnect both hydraulic lines to relieve the pressure, tap the rod guide in with a punch, remove the snap ring and pull the rod and piston assembly out of the hydraulic cylinder that is still attached to the backhoe.
